Timothy Dalton

images

AKA Timothy Peter Dalton

Born: 21-Mar1944
Birthplace: Colwyn Bay, Wales

Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: England
Executive summary: Played James Bond briefly

At 16, Timothy Dalton saw a performance of Macbeth on stage, and decided then that he would be an actor. After high school, Dalton worked with the National Youth Theatre in London. He even attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, but he didn’t like it and left. He remembers a class where students “learned to walk about the stage like ballet dancers”, and says it “took a year to undo the psychological damage that was caused by the oppressive teachers”.

On stage, he earned good reviews acting in plays by William Shakespeare and Eugene O’Neill. He has also done a great deal of television work, some great (the 1978 miniseries Centennial with Richard Chamberlain) and some not-so-great (he played Rhett Butler in Scarlett, the awkward TV sequel to Gone With the Wind).

Dalton is best known for playing James Bond, in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. His was the most serious Bond, and after Roger Moore‘s seven increasingly slapstick 007 films, the character needed to be serious again. Dalton portrayed the spy as someone stuck in a job he didn’t particularly like. The Living Daylights did brisk business, but for Dalton’s second Bond film the producers tweaked their long-running and generally successful formula. Bond was now motivated by a personal vendetta instead of an assignment from M, and he fought the war on drugs instead of the usual “national defense” hokum. The tone was different, and even the title had to be dumbed down — Licence to Kill was originally Licence Revoked, until a studio survey confirmed what executives suspected, that half of Americans didn’t know what the word “revoked” means. For whatever reasons, the film bombed, and it was six years before another Bond film was made, with Pierce Brosnan replacing Dalton.

He also appeared in The Lion in Winter with Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole, and played Mae West‘s husband in Sextette. His other films include Brenda Starr with Brooke Shields, The Beautician and the Beast with Fran Drescher, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action with Brendan Fraser. His ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva made headlines in 2010 as the scorned and threatened ex-lover of Mel Gibson.

Pierce Brosnan

images

AKA Pierce Brendan Brosnan

Born: 16-May1951 [1]
Birthplace: Navan, County Meath, Ireland

Gender: Male
Religion: Roman Catholic
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: Ireland
Executive summary: Remington Steele, James Bond

Pierce Brosnan is an Irish actor who first came to American living rooms as Remington Steele, playing the imposter of a fictitious detective who flirted with Stephanie Zimbalist for five seasons. After the series ended, he played James Bond in four popular 007 films.

Most biographies list Brosnan as being born in 1953, but he has occasionally confided to friends that he is two years older than that. His father deserted the family when Brosnan was an infant, and his mother went to nursing school, leaving young Pierce in the care of assorted friends and family for several years. As a young man, Brosnan began his acting career in the theater, working in London’s West End. One of his first film parts was a tiny role in 1980’s The Mirror Crack’d with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, and directed by the longtime Bond-flick director Guy Hamilton.

Brosnan eventually met and married a Bond girl, Cassandra Harris, who appeared in Roger Moore‘s For Your Eyes Only as well as several episodes of Remington Steele. She had gotten the last name Harris some years earlier, when she married the brother of actor and left-the-cake-out-in-the-rain singer Richard Harris. When Cassandra Harris died of ovarian cancer in 1991, Brosnan adopted her two children. Brosnan’s father also resurfaced when Brosnan became a star with Remington Steele.

Brosnan was originally offered the role of Bond in 1986, for The Living Daylights, but the makers of Remington Steele would not release him from his contract. He made six more episodes of Steele before the series was cancelled, then snagged the role of Bond almost a decade later with GoldenEye in 1995, when Timothy Dalton was let loose. Brosnan’s last turn as Bond came with Die Another Day, in 2002.

While not wearing the Bond tuxedo, his successful films include The Tailor of Panama, After the Sunset, and the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. His flops include the silly volcano film Dante’s Peak, and the remarkably unromantic romantic comedy Laws of Attraction with Julianne Moore.

In May 2003, Brosnan bought a $1,000 bong from the Dementia head shop in Malibu, California. In 2004, he took the test, swore the oath, and became an American citizen. His son Christopher has been arrested at least twice on charges of petty theft.

Sean Connery

images

AKA Thomas Sean Connery

Born: 25-Aug1930
Birthplace: Edinburgh, Scotland

Gender: Male
Religion: Roman Catholic
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: Scotland
Executive summary: James Bond

Military service: British Royal Navy

Sean Connery went to work on a milk delivery truck when he was nine, in the depths of the Depression. He dropped out of school at 13 to work full time, and joined the Navy at 15, where he served aboard the HMS Formidable. In his late teens and early 20s, Connery supported himself as a model and with other odd jobs, including a stint as a mortician’s assistant. He made his professional stage debut in the chorus of the London production of South Pacific in 1951, and his film debut in a tiny, uncredited role in 1955, in Errol Flynn‘s Lilacs in the Spring.

Connery came to moderate fame with a 1957 live telecast of Requiem for A Heavyweight, with Michael Caine. He got the role only when Jack Palance backed out, perilously near the scheduled broadcast date. The show’s producer was unsure about hiring him, but decided to gamble on the near-novice actor when several women on the set whispered that they found Connery attractive. Two years later he was offered two breakthrough roles — king of the apes in the next Tarzan movie, or a tuxedo-clad spy in Dr. No. Connery said no to Tarzan and yes to No.

Dr. No spawned sequel after sequel, and Connery played the spy seven times, with an appealing blend of surface sophistication and subdued savagery. Feeling typecast and undercompensated, Connery eventually walked away from the part. Connery wasn’t the first to play Bond — Barry Nelson had the role in a 1954 television version — but he was the movies’ first James Bond, and is still generally acknowledged as the best. He has had great success in other roles, but even decades later, Connery and Bond remain indelibly linked in the public’s mind. He was named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive in 1989, when he was 59, and Sexiest Man of the Century ten years later.

In 2005, Connery was sued for $30 million by downstairs neighbors in his Manhattan condominium, alleging that years of renovations to his palatial unit had lowered the value of their palatial unit. The suit also alleged that when the neighbors’ daughter knocked on Connery’s door, asking him to stop the “loud music at all hours and stomping about”, the actor’s “appearance and behavior was that of a rude, foul-mouthed, fat old man… Cursing and otherwise using indecent language, Connery demeaned [his neighbor], refused to lower the noise and slammed the door in her face”.

With an especially bad case of male pattern baldness, Connery began losing his hair at the age of 21. Without his toupee, he has been thoroughly bald for decades, except for a small ring of now-gray and thin hair above his ears.

Politically, Connery is a longtime supporter of Scottish independence.

Roger Moore

youngroger2

AKA Roger George Moore

Born: 14-Oct1927
Birthplace: Stockwell, London, England

Gender: Male
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: England
Executive summary: James Bond after Sean Connery

Military service: Military Intelligence (required National Service, 2nd Lt.)

Roger Moore grew up in London, and lived through the blitz during WWII. As a young man, he worked as a model and, briefly, as a draftsman, before being accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his film debut with a tiny role as a soldier in two 1945 films, Caesar and Cleopatra with Claude Rains and Vivien Leigh and Perfect Strangers with Robert Donat and Deborah Kerr. But Moore was mostly seen as a TV actor, after starring as Ivanhoe in a 1958-59 series, and The Alaskans the following season. When James Garner refused to play Bret on Maverick in 1961, Moore was brought in to star as his cousin Beauregarde. Moore and Tony Curtis were The Persuaders in the early 1970s.

Moore is best remembered on the small screen as Simon Templar, the lead spy in The Saint, which prefigured his role as James Bond. Moore made dozens of movies, but none were particularly memorable until Sean Connery refused to reprise his role as James Bond, and Moore became 007 in Live and Let Die (1973). Moore was three years older than Connery, and in Moore’s final Bond film, A View To A Kill in 1985, he was 58, making him the oldest actor to play Bond. Moore’s Bond was seen as somewhat silly, with wisecracks always at the ready, many of which were improvised by Moore.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Portrait
Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s.

Cause of death: Suicide [3]

Executive summary: Some Like It Hot

[1] Los Angeles General Hospital, Los Angeles CA.

[2] 12305 Fifth Helena Dr., Brentwood CA.

[3] According to a 1982 inquest led by Attorney General John Van de Kamp, “Based on the evidence available to us it appears that her death could have been a suicide or a result of an accidental drug overdose… It is possible that while her ingestion of a lethal quantity of barbiturates was voluntary, she may have been in such a state of emotional confusion that she lacked a clearly formed purpose.” Speculation that she was the subject of murder was dismissed out of hand. See “Los Angeles Inquiry on Marilyn Monroe Rules Out Murder”, Associated Press, 29 December 1982.

Bill Clinton

images

William JeffersonBillClinton (born William Jefferson Blythe III; August 19, 1946) is an American politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Inaugurated at age 46, he was the third-youngest president. He took office at the end of the Cold War, and was the first president of the baby boomer generation. Clinton has been described as a New Democrat. Many of his policies have been attributed to a centrist Third Way philosophy of governance.

Born and raised in Arkansas, Clinton became both a student leader and a skilled musician. He is an alumnus of Georgetown University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Kappa Psi and earned a Rhodes Scholarship to attend the University of Oxford. He is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who served as United States Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013 and who was a Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. Both Clintons received law degrees from Yale Law School, where they met and began dating. As Governor of Arkansas, Clinton overhauled the state’s education system, and served as Chair of the National Governors Association.

Clinton was elected president in 1992, defeating incumbent president George H. W. Bush. As president, Clinton presided over the longest period of peacetime economic expansion in American history. He signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement. He implemented Don’t ask, don’t tell, a controversial intermediate step to full gay military integration. After the failed Clinton health care plan attempt, the Republican Party won control of the Congress in 1994 for the first time in 40 years. Two years later, the re-elected Clinton became the first member of the Democratic Party since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second full term as president. He successfully passed welfare reform and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, providing health coverage for millions of children. Later, he was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice in a scandal involving a White House intern, but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate and served his complete term of office. The Congressional Budget Office reported a budget surplus between the years 1998 and 2000, the last three years of Clinton’s presidency.

William Shakespeare

46961152-william-shakespeare

William Shakespeare was baptized on April 26, 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. From roughly 1594 onward he was an important member of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men company of theatrical players. Written records give little indication of the way in which Shakespeare’s professional life molded his artistry. All that can be deduced is that over the course of 20 years, Shakespeare wrote plays that capture the complete range of human emotion and conflict.

Jackie Chan

images

Jackie Chan, SBS, MBE (born Chan Kong-sang, ; 7 April 1954) is a Hong Kong actor, action choreographer, comedian, director, producer, martial artist, screenwriter, entrepreneur, singer, and stunt performer. In his movies, he is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts. He is one of the few actors that did all of his stunts in all of his films. Jackie Chan has been acting since the 1960s and has appeared in over 150 films.

Chan has received stars on the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a cultural icon, Chan has been referenced in various pop songs, cartoons, and video games. An operatically trained vocalist, Chan is also a Cantopop and Mandopop star, having released a number of albums and sung many of the theme songs for the films in which he has starred.

AKA Chan Kong San

Born: 7-Apr1954
Birthplace: Hong Kong

Gender: Male
Religion: Buddhist
Race or Ethnicity: Asian
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: China
Executive summary: Martial arts star, did his own stunts

Jackie Chan is a martial arts film star, often billed as an action star who did his own stunts. For most of his career, Chan performed most of the non-routine stunts in his films, and planned, tested, choreographed, and performed the elaborate, jaw-dropping “wow” fights and jumps that made his films visually spectacular. But nobody outruns time, and in 2012, when Chan was 58 years old, he announced that he would not continue climbing clock towers, kickfighting atop speeding trains, or shimmying up light poles, and that his future action movies would see stuntmen doing more of the stunts.

Chan’s parents were staff workers at the French embassy in Hong Kong; his father was a cook, his mother a maid. He was mostly raised at a boarding school, where academics and performing were both stressed, along with rigorous physical training. With young Chan’s athletic and dramatic skills, he was a minor child actor in Hong Kong movies in the 1960s, and he worked as a stuntman and extra on Bruce Lee‘s 1973 kung fu classic Enter the Dragon. Throughout the 70s, Chan worked as an actor and stuntman on innumerable Hong Kong films. He had been in at least 50 films before his star-making role in 1978’s Drunken Master, with comedy that comes through even in subtitles, and fight scenes that are astonishing.

With Drunken Master, Chan found the movie persona that worked perfectly for him. His characters are usually slackers or wisecrackers, maybe not too bright, but willing to work hard. Chan has said his characters are generally — and intentionally — the opposite of Lee’s stalwart, morally upright, unbeatable heroes. Chan wanted viewers to feel that his character does not want to fight, not because he is philosophically opposed to violence but because he is afraid he will get pummeled.

In the 1980s Chan attempted to export his stardom to America, but his American films (The Big Brawl and The Protector) were duds. Back in Hong Kong, Chan continued making eye-candy: any of his Police Story films are better than Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s best, and the motorcycle-train-helicopter chase sequence at the end of Police Story III: Supercop is amazing to watch — and even more amazing when one recalls that Chan and co-star Michelle Khan did their own stunts. Armour of God: Operation Condor puts an Asian spin on Indiana Jones, and Twin Dragons is perhaps his funniest film. Other essentials include Project A II, Thunderbolt, Fearless Hyena, and Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin.
